Packet Operation
Initializing a Connect
There are two methods available with XPCOM to start a packet
connection. The first is more traditional in nature. To enter
packet, select the appropriate mode (HF or VHF) from the Packet
menu. You my also enter Packet by pressing Alt-N for HF or
Alt-W for VHF.
Steps
a. Press the Alt-C key sequence.
b. At this point a connect list will be displayed. Use
the mouse or arrow keys to select the station that you
wish to connect to. If the station is not in the list
press Alt-C again and you will be prompted for the call
sign of the station you wish to connect to. See Packet
Menu options for information on appending Packet connect
list.
c. Press the enter key
d. At this point the TNC will start the Connect Request
e. If you wish to disconnect the link press the Alt-D.
The second method is to use the Mheard list to find out which
stations have been "heard" by the TNC.

Steps
a. Press the F6 function key. At this point a window will
displayed with the last 18 stations that were decoded.
b. You may connect to one of these stations by using
cursor keys to select the desired station and pressing
the return. If you are using a mouse place the mouse
cursor on the desired station and press the left mouse
button. A connect attempt will be made.
c. If you do not wish to connect with one of the station
simply press the 'ESC' key or press the mouse button off
of the Mheard window.
Disconnecting from a Stream
a. To disconnect a stream. Move to the stream and press
Alt-D. This will start the disconnect sequence.
Changing Connected Streams (PK-232)
There are several ways to change streams while in Packet
operation.
1. The first is to use the Page Up / Page down
keys. This will increment the TNC from stream to
stream.
2. The second method is the click the mouse, is
used, in the desired connect window.
3. The third is probably the most desirable for
a user without mouse capability.
This is to simply press the tab key. The tab key
has two methods of operation.
a. The tab key will move the user to the
NEXT stream that has had INCOMING data.
This assumes that the user is not
currently active on that stream.
b. If no data has come in on any
connected stream the tab key will simply
move to the next connected stream.
Note-> As the user moves from stream to
stream an indicator will appear in the
window showing that the stream has been
Activated as the output stream.

Notification of Incoming Data
XPCOM has two methods of indicating if data is being received
on a Non-Active stream.
The first method is the default, in the status bar a flashing
number will appear when data comes in on a Non-Active stream.
If the user has selected the Alarm option in the Packet Window
setup parameters, a short beep will occur on the first data
received from a Non-Active stream.
Note -> A non-active stream is any connected stream that is
not the user's current output stream.
Mailbox Option (PK-232)
XPCOM fully supports the mailbox option for the PK-232.
To invoke the Mailbox use the Mailbox On selection under
the Packet Menu. The following commands are available
for the Mailbox. (The mailbox my also be accessed by
pressing F1 while in Packet, Pactor or AMTOR).
Bye (Ctrl-B) Exits the Mail Box.
Edit (Ctrl-E) Edit the delivery
information of the message.
Select the Help Option for more
information or refer to your
PK-232 users guide.
Kill (Ctrl-K) Kill a message.
Enter the number of the message
to be killed. Then press either
Return to Kill the message or
ESC to cancel.
List (Ctrl-L) List the current
messages in the Mailbox.
Read (Ctrl-R) Read a message.
Enter the number of the message
to be read.
Send (Ctrl-S) Send a message. Enter the call of
the station that the message is to
be sent. And a short description of
the Message. Remember to make the
message private by using the using
the Edit function described above.

All command options may be selected by clicking
the mouse on the Status Bar.
All other functions are available while in the
Mailbox. Example, if you wish to Upload a file
to the Mailbox simply press Alt-T. If you wish
to save a message to disk press Alt-R. The
printer may be toggled on/off by using the Alt-P
sequence.
XP Windows (AEA Host Only)
After the connect has been established a window will appear on
the screen. In the upper left corner will be the CALL SIGN of
the station connected to, as well a File Status. The file status
is used to tell the user whether or not he has a capture file
opened on that channel. The user may use the Alt-R keystroke
sequence to begin/end a capture file. Additionally if the user
has selected the Auto Search parameter, the program will display
the name and QTH of the other station if he has been worked in
the past.
To initiate another connect use the Alt-C command of use the
Mheard list. The program will look for the next available
channel and start the connect process. A message will be
displayed at the bottom of the screen that a "Connect Attempt"
is in process.
Moving and Sizing XP Windows
The windows used in XPCOM for AEA Host mode may be moved and
sized freely by the user.
Using a mouse
To Move a window with a mouse :
a. Place the mouse on the TOP BORDER of the window.
b. Press and hold the LEFT button on the MOUSE.
c. Move window to desired location.
To Size a window using the Mouse:
a. Place the cursor in the LOWER RIGHT corner of the window.
b. PRESS and HOLD the Left Mouse button.
c. Size window as desired and release the Mouse Button.

To Toggle (Alt-F3) the window size :
a. Place the mouse cursor on the extreme UPPER RIGHT hand
corner of the window and press the Left mouse button.
Using the Keyboard
To move a window using the keyboard.
a. Press the F4.
b. Use the UP, DOWN, LIGHT and RIGHT arrow keys to move
the window on the screen. The Page up, Page down, Home
and End keys may also be used. These keys allow for a
larger movement ( 5 rows / columns per keystroke ).
c. Press the 'ESC' key when done.
To size a window using the keyboard.
a. Press the F4.
b. Hold the Shift key down. Some laptops require pressing
the NUM lock key to enter a shifted keyboard mode.
c. Use the UP, DOWN, LIGHT and RIGHT arrow keys to size
the window on the screen. The Page Up, Page Down, Home
and End Keys may be used to make a larger change in the
size ( 5 lines)
d. Press the 'ESC' key when done. This will return you to
normal operating mode.
To Toggle Window Size :
a. Press the Alt-F3 Sequence.
Tiling Windows (Alt-F1)
It is possible to display all available windows on the screen
simultaneously. To tile the windows press Alt-F1 or use the menu
option Tile Windows in the Setup menu. This will redraw all
windows on the screen, with each window having the same physical
size. The user may use the Toggle Window command to maximize the
current receive channels window.

Cascading Windows (Alt-F2)
Cascading windows allows the user to stack windows on the
screen, giving a partial view of all background activity. This
option places the current "ACTIVE WINDOW" at the top of the
stack. To change the top window, either click the mouse on the
top border of the window or use the or PAGE DOWN keys.
Toggling Window Size (Alt-F3)
This feature allows you to toggle the current "active" windows
size. If the window has not been previously been sized this
command will toggle the window to the same size as the receive
window.
